Placement Test

Before you can start your ESL class, you will need to take a placement test. Placement tests are usually scheduled on the Friday the week before each ESL course starts. They are scheduled at 9:00 a.m. and usually last between 3-4 hours. The test costs $100. However, if you decide to enroll in our ESL program, the $100 will be credited towards your tuition.

The placement test consists of multiple-choice reading and listening questions and a speaking section. The speaking section will ask you around 10-20 questions about different topics. For example, what kind of clothing you like to wear, what you would do if you won the lottery, or how many members are in your family. Our placement tests are meant to test yourEnglish reading, listening, and speaking skills.

After you finish your placement test, we will look over your tests and then place you in the appropriate level. Based on your reading, listening, and speaking scores, we will choose the lowest level score that you received, and place you in that level. For example, if you scored at level 4for reading, but your listening score was at level 3, you would be placed in the level 3 class. We do this because we do not want you to fall behind and want to help you improve on the areas you are not as strong in. If we were to place you in level 4, you may do well on reading English, but when doing anEnglish listening activity, you may find it too difficult and fall behind in class.

Your ESL class should be challenging and fun, but it won’t be when you are struggling to catch up. The placement test also shows us what you may need to improve on, so we know what to help you focus on to keep improving your English.
