Idioms are phrases that English speakers use in everyday conversation, but don’t always make sense if they are pulled apart, word by word. This week is culture week and our classes will get to explore other cultures and foods! Here are some common idioms that are associated with things involving food to add to your conversational vocabulary.
1. Walk on eggshells
This idiom is used when someone has to act very sensitively to avoid offending someone else.
For example: We have to walk on eggshells around our daughter about her lost dog.
2. Spill the beans
This idiom is used when you want to say or reveal your secrets or someone else’s secrets.
For example: I hope she will spill the beans about where she gets her recipes from.
3. Bad egg
This idiom describes a person who does bad things or cannot be trusted.
For example: There is always a bad egg in every group.
4. Hard nut to crack
This idiom is used when describing a difficult problem or a difficult person to understand or figure out.
For example: This puzzle is a hard nut to crack.
