How to Change Your Visa Status: From Tourist to F1 Student Visa
Changing your visa status from a tourist (B-2) visa to an F1 student visa can be a smart choice if you decide to pursue your studies in the United States. This process allows you to legally remain in the country while attending an accredited school like American English Language School. However, there are important steps and considerations to keep in mind to ensure a smooth transition.

Steps to Change Your Visa Status:

1. Enroll in a SEVP-Certified School
The first step in changing your status to an F1 student visa is applying to a Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)-certified school, such as American English Language School. Once accepted, the school will issue you a Form I-20, which is required for your visa change application.

2. Submit Form I-539

After receiving your Form I-20, you will need to submit Form I-539, Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status, to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Along with this form, you will need to provide supporting documents such as proof of financial support, a copy of your passport, and your current visa status.

3. Pay the SEVIS Fee

As part of your application, you are required to pay the SEVIS I-901 fee. This fee supports the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), which is used to track your status as an international student in the U.S.

4. Wait for Approval

Processing times for a change of status request can vary, so it's essential to apply as early as possible. During this waiting period, you should remain in lawful status and avoid engaging in activities not permitted under your current visa.

5. Begin Your Studies

Once your F1 status is approved, you will be able to start your studies at American English Language School or another SEVP-certified institution. Remember, you cannot begin your academic program until your change of status is finalized.

Important Considerations

Timing: Be sure to apply for a change of status before your tourist visa expires. If your visa status expires while your application is pending, you may have to leave the U.S.

Travel Restrictions: Once you’ve applied for a change of status, it’s generally recommended that you avoid international travel until your new visa status is approved. Traveling outside the U.S. could result in your application being considered abandoned.
