OLS Culture Week

Every quarter our ESL students look forward to the highly anticipated “Culture Week”. Culture Week consists of various activities that allow our students to discover the American culture by interacting not only with their classmates, but with the American people outside of the borders of the classroom. The late Gandhi once said, “A nation's culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of its people.” It is crucial for our students to integrate with other Americans and for that reason, we immerse our students in activities that deal with interacting in real life “American” situations. 
 

One of the activities that the students thoroughly enjoy is the “Can you help me find this item?” game. A student walks into a certain store with a given task of finding an item, but there is a twist! The students have to describe the item to the clerk without saying the name of the item! This particular task really challenges the student to formulate words and descriptions while practicing English and striking up a conversation with an actual American. 
 

Another activity that the students really enjoy is Movie Day. With classic American films like “It’s a Wonderful Life”, “The Great Gatsby”, and “The Wizard of Oz”, students get to know past and present  American life as they dissect the film’s cultural aspects as well as the meanings of certain American idioms, phrases, and expressions. 
 

To top the week off, students are ecstatic for Brunch Day because you can’t have American culture without good ol’ American food! Students pile into the van and the teachers treat the students to classic American meals. Southern California contains many classic American restaurants so the students have a plethora of options to choose from. With restaurants like Kimmie’s Coffee Cup, Monkey Business Cafe, or even In-N-Out Burger, students feast and appreciate the goodness of true American cuisine. 
 

Amongst all the other activities that we do at Optimus Language School, our students are prepared to thrive as an assimilated American!
