What to Do if Your Visa Is Denied

What to Do if Your Visa Is Denied

Last week, our blog discussed how to apply for an F-1 visa. After you have been accepted into a SEVP approved school, completed the Form DS-160, and scheduled your visa interview, you will need to prepare for your visa interview. Hopefully, your visa application is approved. The consular office that conducts your interview will determine whether or not you are qualified to receive a student visa. They may also require further documents or information to approve your application. If your visa application is approved, GREAT! You may have to pay a visa issuance fee, but then it is time to get ready for your trip. Pack up your things, book your flight, and arrange your housing situation as soon as you can. On the other hand, if your visa application is denied, you might be unsure of what to do next.

Your options vary based on the reason for your visa denial. You should receive a notice explaining the reason for your denial or if further documents are needed. You cannot appeal the decision. However, you can reapply and submit a new application. Before you reapply, be sure to analyze why your application was denied so you can prepare the necessary documents. Some common reasons that a student’s visa is denied are a lack of financial proof to support the student’s education and life while studying in the U.S., missing documents, or the applicant has not provided sufficient evidence that he or she intends to return to their home country after they have completed their studies.

If the reason that your visa was denied is fixable, make sure that you resolve that issue before reapplying. You will need to collect documents or evidence to help support your application and overturn the reason that your first application was denied. After you have sufficient support, you can submit another visa application and schedule your interview. You will need to pay the visa interview fee again. If you can provide the necessary information to the officer, then hopefully your visa will be approved and you can be on your way to studying in the U.S.
