At American English Language School in Los Angeles, California, our ESL program follows a quarter system. Each quarter of our ESL program is 12 weeks. During these 12 weeks, students will complete many reading, listening, writing, grammar, and speaking challenges. While students will complete various activities to improve their English speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills, the most enjoyable learning experience students have is our Culture Week which takes place during the last week of each quarter. After a long 11 weeks of intense studying, we want to give our students a little break to enjoy themselves while also letting them use the English skills they have been working on improving the entire quarter.
While the 11th week of our ESL program is all about reviewing previous material and studying for the final, the 12th week is all about fun. During this week, students will get together and go to various places and do fun activities inside and outside of the classroom. Typically, teachers and students will plan which places or activities they would like to do in the previous weeks. The activities vary by each quarter and students’ preferences.
Previously, we have had students get together to have a potluck where they cook their favorite foods and share them with the other students. Students have also shopped at local malls, watched a movie at a movie theatre, eaten at unique restaurants together, visited amusement parks, had board game days, and went to local universities.
We know many students only use English while in the classroom; Culture Week allows students to use their English outside of the classroom in a fun and interactive way. These activities will allow students to really put their English skills to the test. Additionally, we hope it gives our students the confidence to feel comfortable speaking with native speakers outside of the classroom.
