what is a J-1 visa?

A J-1 visa program is also known as an “exchange visitor program.” Designed for people traveling from foreign countries to America for work and study purposes, a J-1 visa is meant to accommodate visitors interested in promoting cultural exchange. There are, of course, some set criteria that all foreign travelers interested in this visa must meet. Among these criteria are English language requirements as well as a sponsorship provided by a University, a private sector, or a government program.

J-1 visas are issued with a hope of promoting and increasing understanding amongst all different cultures on a global scale. For this reason, all visitors utilizing a J-1 visa are met with the expectation that they will ultimately travel back to their home country to share the cultural information and experiences they gained while participating in the J-1 visa program. Most participants are required to return to their home country for a two year period to ensure that the cultural knowledge gained during their visit can be shared with the people in their country of origin. In some cases, a J-1 visa participant might obtain a No Objection Statement (NOS) from the government of their home country, and this will waive the aforementioned two year home country residency requirement.
