The ESL Classroom: OLS Teacher’s Role

The ESL Classroom: OLS Teacher’s Role

At OLS, we encourage our teachers to create an environment that promotes student participation and friendly conversation. The main goal of the ESL program is to make sure our students are proficient in speaking and listening when engaging in normal conversations. Since our class size is relatively small compared to most ESL schools, we use that to our advantage by getting to know our students’ goals. In a small group ratio, a teacher is more of a moderator rather than a lecturer. A teacher’s role is to introduce the topic and to allow the students to freely discuss it with their peers. Our teacher will go over the materials of the book with the class; however, the whole class will have as much listening and speaking practice as possible. For example, if a class is going over the topic of housing, the teacher will ask the students questions about it to get them more engaged. Such questions may include “What kind of house do you prefer to live in?” or “What is the most popular type of housing in your area?” Every student will have their own opinions and this allows the class to practice their speaking because they will be answering the questions. In addition to practicing their speaking, the class will also be practicing their listening because they will be listening to their peers’ responses.
