After the Thanksgiving holiday, the next holiday is Christmas. Christmas is a huge holiday that is full of family, friends, and of course, gifts. Everyone celebrates Christmas a little differently, but there are a few traditions that most families in the United States all share.
Just like Thanksgiving, families usually get together and enjoy a feast. However, the main course of the Christmas dinner varies by family. Some families will have turkey or ham, some families eat tamales, some families eat roast beef, and some families may even eat a combination of all of these dishes! There are also usually a lot of delicious sweets to eat. However, as with the main course, the desserts vary by family. Some common desserts are gingerbread cookies, pie, and pudding.
A big holiday tradition is gift giving! Some people shop in advance for the holiday, and some people buy their gifts last minute. Either way, the main idea behind gift-giving is to buy things that you think that the other person will enjoy. There’s also the joy of receiving gifts from others.
Some fun gift-giving traditions are white elephant and secret Santa.
White elephant is a game where everyone brings a random gift. The gift can be anything! Everyone puts their gifts together, but no one knows who brought which gift. One by one, each person will pick one of the gifts to unwrap. However, after the first person picks their gift, everyone has the option to either pick a new unwrapped gift or they can steal someone’s already unwrapped gift.
Secret Santa involves buying gifts that are intended for a particular person. However, when the person unwraps their secret Santa gift, they are supposed to guess who their secret Santa was.
Next, a big holiday activity is going to look at Christmas lights. During the holidays, many neighborhoods and public areas decorate their area with beautiful Christmas lights, and even put on a light show! Families can drive or walk through neighborhoods or attend public events to admire the amazing light displays. It is the perfect way to soak up the festive holiday feeling.
Last, there is also gingerbread house fun! Many people make houses out of gingerbread houses with their families for decorations and eventual eating. You build the gingerbread house and then you can decorate it with chocolate, candy canes, gumdrops, icing, and any other treats to make it look however you want. It is a great way to spend an evening when it is too cold to be outside.
Christmas is a widely celebrated holiday that makes you appreciate each other and everything that you have. It is a great way to show those you love that you appreciate them by getting them something special. We hope you enjoy this Christmas holiday with American English Language School!
